Blues, Zydeco and the Peking Opera at Bangor, Maine's American Folk Festival

One of central Maine's most exciting cultural events, The American Folk Festival, is happening this weekend-- August 23 through 25 on the Bangor waterfront. This huge festival is a colorful whirlwind of performances hailing from all over the country, with cultural roots all over the globe.

In years past, I have participated in the fest as a vendor. This year I decided to enjoy the festival in a different way-- Sadly, I won't have a booth in the artists' and vendors' area this year, but I'm excited to instead take the time to enjoy the festivities and performances with my husband, Anthony.

To plan your weekend at the American Folk Festival, grab a schedule and check out the performers! Here are a few that will pique your interest:

Rosie Ledet, the "sweetheart of zydeco," is an American Zydeco accordion player and singer, and is among the few zydeco artists who still sing and write some of their own material in Creole French. She will perform on Saturday, August 24 at 2:15pm on the Bangor Daily News Railroad Stage.

The Qi Shu Fang Beijing Peking Opera Company, shown here performing in Wuhan City, capital of central China's Hubei Province, will be showcasing their talent at the 2013 American Folk Festival. They will be on the LL Bean Penobscot Stage at 1:30 pm on Saturday, August 24.

International festival favorite Sista Monica Parker, shown performing at Cisco Blues Festival in 2009. She will perform on the Bangor Daily News Railroad Stage on Friday, August 23 at 9:30 pm.

A Sanctuary for Art (and Wildlife): Maine's Gilsland Farm Audubon Show

YIKES! Studio necklace
This year I'll be wrapping up my summer craft shows with the Gilsland Farm Audubon Show in Falmouth, Maine. I'll be showing the best of my summer collection, and I'm excited to share these pieces-- from earrings and bangles to showpiece necklaces with loads of beautiful detailed patterns and colors.

The show itself takes place this upcoming weekend, Aug 17 & 18, at the Maine Audubon headquarters, a sixty-five acre wildlife sanctuary on the Presumpscot River, near Maine's most populous city, Portland.

The sanctuary is a hub of education and environmental advocacy, with programs to help protect and preserve a number of animal species in Maine. (You can find out more about getting involved with their very interesting tracking programs here!)

The sanctuary is not only a beautiful setting for a craft show, the Gilsland Farm Audubon Show is also raises money for the Maine Audubon. The small admission fee ($3/members, $4/nonmembers) benefits the Audubon's programs.

If you want to check out the rest of the sanctuary, you'll find that Gilsland Farm’s 2.5 miles of trails wind through meadows, in and out of woods, and along the shore of the Presumpscot River estuary. All of the trails are gentle with no steep grades.

Along the way, you might see meadowlarks, warblers, frogs, and red fox. It's the perfect chance to see some wildlife and some lush greenery before summer starts to slip away!

Starfish, Shells and Beachcombing Tips

This summer I began working on a series of multi-hued, sparkly starfish cuffs. The starfish, adorned with Swarovski crystal, wraps around the wrist in a fun, modern design. These unique pieces of "arm candy" can go anywhere, but they're just begging to be worn to the beach!

The starfish (the non-jewelry kind, of course) is a pretty amazing animal. They come in a dazzling array of colors, shapes and textures. Some are smooth, some nubbly, some even spiky.  Red, orange, pink and yellow are popular colors for the sea star. And speaking of the name "sea star," that's the correct name for this cool echinoderm, which is related not to fish but to urchins and sand dollars. We think of a typical sea star as having five arms, but did you know that some have as many as 40?  Starfish have no blood (they pump seawater through their bodies instead) and no brain. Instead of a brain, they have nerves throughout their bodies that give them information about their environment, including the location of prey (like clams and oysters) and approaching predators, like king crabs.

Starfish are one resident of the intertidal pools on  the beaches and coasts of Maine. But there are plenty of other interesting tenants, as well as non-living treasures, like polished seaglass, fascinating shells, and driftwood. At the end of August, the summers will start to cool in Maine, but there's no better time to try beachcombing.

Beachcombing is a longstanding tradition of searching the shores for objects beautiful or useful. While people have probably always looked to the beaches for unique adornments and trinkets, the term beachcombing was first used to describe the activities of wayward sailors, who stopped off on warm tropical islands and conveniently forgot to re-board their ships. They often made a living for a while by combing the shores for useful items which could be sold to whomever would pay. When they became tired of this vagabondish lifestyle, they would find another ship passing through that needed a crewmember to replace some other who'd run off to scour some warm beach for valuables.

Modern beachcombing is often a recreational activity, although there are some who have made a lifestyle out of the practice. Usually a metal detector and a dedicated attitude accompany the serious commercial beachcomber. For the rest of us, the beaches are simply places of wonder. The sea yields up it's leftovers and long-kept secrets, in the form of polished fragments of pottery and bottles, discarded marine refuse, weathered wood and empty, perfect urchin shells.

Many websites give tips for the recreational beachcomber. If you prefer to just meander along and find what catches your eye, there's still a good chance you'll find something beautiful. If you prefer to enhance your luck, try out these beachcombing tips!

Beachcombing Tips

1. The first tip for beachcombing is to dress appropriately. Wear good shoes-- perhaps even water shoes that will keep your feet cozy and grippy even on slick tidal rocks. And remember how much cooler it can be at the seashore, and pack a sweatshirt and jacket for your comfort.1

2. Bring a camera! Not everything you spot at the beach can come home with you, so you may want to "collect" some things with pictures only. Of course, any living creature should stay at the beach. It's also fun to document your finds, and take some pictures of the beautiful shoreline as the day passes.2

3. Bring a few bags! And bring an extra bag for picking up trash that you find so that you can drop it in a trash container on the way out. You can also line a nice canvas bag with a plastic bag and use it for your treasures. It will be both strong and more waterproof. Check out these beautiful recycled bags by the Green Bag Lady.

4. A low tide is a beachcomber's best friend. You can always check tidal times for your area online. If you arrive when the tide is receding, you'll have plenty of time to get into your groove and explore the farthest reaches of the low tide area.

5. Check the beach after a storm! Of course, be careful if the ocean is still turbulent, but after-storm beachcombing can be very exciting and rewarding. Likewise, the early morning hours may offer more treasures, as the day's visitors have not yet arrived to pick through what has washed up during the night.3

6. Extra ideas: Try bringing along a few ziplock bags to store and protect individual items. Grab some hand sanitizer. If you want to do a bit of trekking along the beach, you may wish to use a backpack to carry your beachcombing gear more easily. And above all, remember to enjoy your adventure. Not every beachcombing trip results in amazing finds, but every day on the beach can be wonderful. Bring a lunch, bring a friend, and bring your joy of discovery and silly grins! Maybe you'll even find a starfish.

What's On My Workbench: Summery Stacking Bangles and Cuffs

Here are a few recent items from my workbench, where I've been exploring Swarovski-studded starfish cuff bracelets, summery stacking bangles, and lots of color. When creating I like to drift between the real and unreal – fantasies and reality.

Kickoff to a Great Summer: What To Do and See in Maine

Memorial Day marks the beginning of Summer Proper in Maine, and I thought I'd take the chance to point out a few things to do in Maine that are especially fun or noteworthy! Have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend, and check out all Maine has to offer this summer!

The town of Gardiner's Ride Into Summer Parade on Saturday, May 25, is "a wicked tasty way to kick-off the summer season in Maine"! This event includes a motorcycle and bicycle parade, a local pizza contest, live tunes and Maine's biggest fireworks display.

On Monday, May 27, Memorial Day, towns across Maine will host parades and honor veterans. Memorial services will be held across the state. For a list of the parades and memorial services taking place all across Maine, click here.

In the Downeast/Acadia region, daily birdwatching tours will be taking place from Friday, May 24 through Monday, May 27 as part of the 10th Annual Downeast Spring Birding Festival. The area is one of the important bird areas in the US. The Festival offers birders self-guided explorations as well as guided hikes, boat tours (including a puffin trip to Machias Seal Island), and presentations led by area experts. See more here.

The Piscataquis Heritage Hot Air Balloon Festival (the very first!) takes place May 31 through June 2! Check out their website for a full schedule of events, which will include music, artisans and crafters, demonstrations, and kid activities. The full schedule of balloon lift-offs and other fun stuff is found here.

Wherever (or whenever, if you're a part-time Mainer!) you are in Maine, make sure you make time to visit a farmer's market. If you're planning a BBQ, it's exactly where you want to go to pick up fresh produce, even fresh cuts of beef, pork, or chicken. Visit the mainefarmersmarkets.org website for a listing of farmer's markets in Maine!

)
And of course, whether you live in Maine or will be coming here this Memorial Day weekend, I hope you'll support local artisans, craftspeople, farmers and businesses. Thank you for shopping local, sending your money back into the economy and building a more vibrant local economy!

The gallery in which I am a member artist, SevenArts Gallery, in Ellsworth, is open Monday - Saturday and will be open Memorial Day. I have a great selection of new, exciting jewelry for the Summer season. Please stop by! ❉

Yikes! Studio Summer Selection is Going to Make You Feel Beautiful

Next weekend is Memorial Day weekend and whatever your travel plans (or your stay-at-home-and-relax plans!) I hope you travel safely! This week I've been working in the studio to bring you my fresh summer collection, full of bright summery hues.

My beautiful, exciting and wearable pieces of jewelry are handcrafted with an artist's attention to detail and craftsmanship-- although when you're wearing them, you'll simply notice how beautiful they make you feel.

First up, I want to show you the necklace that I consider the "perfect summer necklace" (Okay, I might be a bit biased.) But I think you will agree!

The beads are handcrafted individually by hand using multiple polymer techniques. They are then cured and lightly sanded. The sparkle comes from generous Swarovski crystal embellishment.

Tangerine Dream is the name of this bright sparkling orange, fushia and gold polymer necklace. Easy elegance, it's an ideal necklace to accentuate a pretty sundress, or add dressiness and a feminine sparkle to a crisp button-down shirt. What do you think?

See it here on Etsy.

My cuff bracelets this year embrace the nubbly textures and cool colors of the echinoderm-- the sea star! These pretty, sparkly and bright cuffs are so fun to wear!

These cuffs are handcrafted through a painstaking and careful process to create one of the most interesting and eye-catching bracelets you'll find anywhere.

To order one of these limited edition starfish cuffs, visit yikesstudio.com (see the bottom of the page for quick ordering!) or contact me directly to order yours-- just email suzanne@yikesstudio.com!

I have one more special piece to show you today-- the fuchsia bangle bracelet. An amazing, brightly colored polymer bangle bracelet made with great attention to detail and excellent craftsmanship.

I've decided to run a limited-time sale on these bangle bracelets. These fully hand-crafted, lightweight, bright and beautiful bracelets are made to last and bring you joyful color for a long time. Right now they are just $72 from my website. Scroll down to see your choice of splashy, vibrant colors and choose one that is you, through and through!
